CREW
Ruth Calder
Founder
Ruth started Slack Water in 1988 with a borrowed work boat and a pile driver she rebuilt herself.
She ran every job for the first twenty years and still walks most site visits on the Saanich Peninsula. The rule that we test every pile we drive is hers.
Before the business, Ruth spent eight years as a deckhand and then mate on the tugs that towed log booms between Crofton and Nanaimo.
She handed day-to-day management to her son Owen in 2016 and now spends her time on the jobs she likes best: seawalls, breakwaters and anything with old stone in it.
FUN FACT
Ruth has taken a New Year’s Day swim off the company float every year since 1989, and she has never once worn a wetsuit for it.
